Saturday 9 September - You will be collected from Orvieto train station and driven to Pitigliano, set on high tufa cliffs chiselled with caves and tower- houses overlooking breathtaking countryside.

Dinner will be in a local restaurant where you will sample some of the mouth watering dishes that this area has to offer.

 Sunday 10 September - Exploring Pitigliano

 Distance: approx. 8km/5miles.

Max. altitude: approx. 313 metres

Degree of difficulty: moderate

This morning, with your guide, you will explore  the old medieval streets and Jewish quarter of the town which dates back to Etruscan origin and then came under Roman rule before passing into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi family of Sovana, then the Orsini family and in 1608 became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. After a light lunch you will walk down to the valleys surrounding the town to explore the famous vie cave, narrow streets hewed out of the tufaceous rock by the Etruscans to give access to the nearby settlements, and lined with caves and tombs. You will finish the day with a visit to a local winery. Dinner in a local restaurant.

Monday 11 September - Pitigliano to Sovana

Distance: approx. 9km/5.5miles.

Max. altitude: approx. 313 metres

Degree of difficulty: easy

Shade: good

 You will walk in the footsteps of the Etruscans to Sovana where there will be time to explore the village and the fascinating Tomba del Sileno as well as the unique Tomba Ildebranda. You will return to Pitigliano by bus. Dinner in a local restaurant.

Tuesday 12 September – Vitozza to Sorano

Distance: approx. 10km/6 miles.

Max. altitude: approx. 300metres

Degree of difficulty: moderate

Shade: good

This morning you will leave Pitigliano and drive to the to the nearby village of San Quirico to start our walk to Vitozza, around two hundred caves, it was one of the largest cave settlements in Italy.

Situated in a rocky, isolated position in the valley of the River Fiora  lush with vegetation and springs these caves were inhabited from prehistoric times up until fairly recently.   From here we will walk down to the valley of the River Lente where we will pass through woodlands following the river to the medieval town of Sorano, set on a large tufa cliff and dominated by the Orsini Fortress.

After lunch there will be a guided visit of the underground passageways below the fortress before starting our transfer to Porto Santo Stefano on Monte Argentario. A beautiful peninsula jutting out into the Tuscan Arcipelago, with olive groves and vineyards, steep cliffs and sandy coves. Dinner at the hotel.

Wednesday 13 September - Exploring Argentario

Distance: approx. 12km/7miles.

Max. Altitude: approx. 600 metres

Degree of difficulty: moderate

Shade: scarce

This morning you will leave your hotel in Porto Santo Stefano and explore the peninsula on foot and by local bus. You will visit Porto Ercole and discover the woodlands of Monte Argentario accompanied by breathtaking views across to the island of Giglio. Lunch will be in a local trattoria. At the end of the day you will be driven back to your hotel.

This evening you are free to do as you please.

Thursday 14 September – The Island of Giglio

Distance: approx. 8km/5miles.

Max. Altitude: approx. 490 metres

Degree of difficulty: moderate

Shade: scarce

Today you will take the ferry to the island of Giglio, one of the islands which make up the Tuscan Arcipelago. From the port you will take a scenic walk across the island for lunch at an isolated retreat which can only be reached on foot or by boat. You will sample their home grown produce and then a boat will take you back to the port to catch your ferry back to the mainland

Dinner in a local restaurant.

Friday 15 September – Day of Departure

Today you will be driven to Orbetello station to start your return trip.
